In November HP became the first major computer manufacturer to join the 80 PLUS energy efficiency program. Beginning January 2007, the company will offer 80 PLUS-certified power supplies in its Compaq 7000 and 5000 series business PCs. Power supplies certified by 80 PLUS are at least 80% efficient at converting the high-voltage AC power from wall outlets to low-voltage DC power used inside computers. Ecos Consulting, which administers the 80 PLUS program, says that computers using 80 PLUS-certified power supplies use 15% to 25% less electricity than standard computers, saving $25 to $30 over the life of a computer used during traditional office hours.
